Size every coil handling attachment to the heaviest coil it will ever lift, not the average — with a minimum safety factor of 4:1 per IS 3815 / EN 13157. Getting this wrong is the single most common cause of damaged coils, unsafe lifts, and unplanned downtime.
Start with the maximum, not the average
Coil weights on a mixed-product line vary by grade, gauge, and width. It's tempting to size equipment around the typical coil your plant handles, but the safe working load (SWL) has to cover the heaviest coil that will ever pass through — even if that only happens occasionally. A hook, grab, or tong rated for your average load will be overstressed the day a heavier coil arrives.
Checklist for selecting SWL
- Identify your maximum coil weight. Pull this from mill records, not estimates — include any planned future product mix, not just what you handle today.
- Apply the required safety factor. A minimum 4:1 safety factor applies per IS 3815 / EN 13157, meaning the equipment's ultimate failure load is at least four times its rated SWL.
- Match SWL to your crane's net capacity. The attachment's own dead weight subtracts from the crane's rated capacity — a heavier hook or grab reduces the coil weight you can actually lift.
- Check coil ID, OD, and width range together with capacity. A hook or grab rated for the right tonnage but the wrong bore or width range still won't do the job safely.
- Confirm the SWL marking and test certificate. Every lifting attachment should ship with a proof load test certificate and a permanently marked SWL — verify both before it goes into service.
- Re-verify SWL whenever your product mix changes. If your mill starts rolling heavier gauges or wider coils, existing equipment needs to be re-checked against the new maximum, not assumed to still be adequate.

Different attachments, same principle
C hooks, coil grabs, and coil tongs all apply this the same way, even though they grip coils differently — a C hook engages the coil bore, a coil grab clamps the outer or inner diameter, and a coil tong grips the OD with jaw pressure. Regardless of grip method, the SWL calculation starts from the same number: your heaviest coil, with the required safety factor built in. Common sizing mistakes
- Sizing to average coil weight instead of maximum
- Ignoring coil width variation in a mixed-width operation
- Skipping proof load tests to save time or cost
- Continuing to operate equipment after a documented capacity change in the product line
- Assuming SWL transfers between different hook or grab types without re-verification
When to bring in an engineering team
If your maximum coil weight is close to the rated SWL of your current equipment, if you're introducing a new product line, or if you're unsure what safety factor your existing attachments were designed to, that's the point to get an engineering review rather than guess. A proper SWL review looks at your actual coil dimensions, crane rating, and duty cycle together — not just the tonnage number on the nameplate.
