The Drop Weight Tear Tester measures how well a ferritic steel resists brittle fracture propagation — the property that decides whether a crack in a pipeline arrests or runs. A notched specimen is broken under a controlled drop and its fracture surface assessed.

The Drop Weight Tear Tester (DWTT) is built at our Pithampur works in India and exported to pipe mills, plate mills and independent test houses abroad. It is assembled, calibrated and witness tested complete at the works and only then dismantled for shipment, so what arrives has already been proved as a whole machine.

Export Supply and Shipping

  • Shipping: Frame, tup and anvil assembly and instrumentation crated separately; FOB Nhava Sheva or Mundra, or CIF your port.
  • Standards: Configured for ASTM E436 and API RP 5L3, with the works test report and calibration certificates issued with the machine.
  • Electrics to destination: Control and instrumentation built for your supply — 380, 400, 415 or 440 V at 50 or 60 Hz — and CE marked where required.
  • Erection support: Foundation and impact loading drawings issued at order; a commissioning engineer can be deputed to erect the machine and re-calibrate it on your foundation.
  • Documents and payment: Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading; quoted in US dollars.

Frequently Asked Questions

What impact energy range does the DWTT cover?

Impact energies from 20,000 to 120,000 joules at impact velocities of 5-8 m/s, on specimens of 300×75 mm and 3-50 mm thickness, at test temperatures from -100°C to +20°C.

Why is DWTT testing required for pipeline steel?

The drop weight tear test measures a steel’s resistance to running fracture — the property that determines whether a crack in a gas pipeline arrests or propagates. Pipeline grades are routinely qualified by DWTT under API and ASTM requirements.

Is the Drop Weight Tear Tester customised to my requirement?

Yes. Every machine we build is custom-engineered — capacity, dimensions, and configuration are matched to your line. Send your requirement via the enquiry form or call +91 91091 02280 for a firm quote. Equipment is manufactured to ASTM E436, API RP 5L3, EN 10274, and test certificates are available on request.

How is the Drop Weight Tear Tester (DWTT) shipped and re-calibrated abroad?

It is assembled, calibrated and witness tested complete at our works and only then dismantled for shipment, so what arrives has already been proved as a whole machine. A commissioning engineer can be deputed to erect it and re-calibrate it on your own foundation.
